7th AFNET/EHRA Consensus Conference: Expert Meeting to Discuss the Future of AF Research and Management

“Management of patients with AF: New therapies and special populations” is the title of the upcoming 7th consensus conference co-organised by the AFNET and the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA). The meeting will take place in Lisbon, Portugal, from 14 to 16 March 2019. It is envisaged to continue the successful series of international consensus conferences that started in 2007. The scientific committee of the conference consists of the cardiologists Prof. Paulus Kirchhof, Birmingham, UK, Prof. Ulrich Schotten, Maastricht, NL, Prof. Hein Heidbüchel, Antwerp, Belgium, and Prof. Gerhard Hindricks, Leipzig, Germany.

Prof. Kirchhof explains: “Atrial fibrillation (AF) remains a major health challenge. Despite the progress made in the last decade, AF still contributes to mortality and morbidity and to cognitive decline and dementia. Exciting new insights into AF management led to new approaches to treatment. These novel concepts require discussion. Invited international experts will meet in Lisbon to discuss the future of AF research and management, with a view to improve outcomes for all patients with AF.”

More than 75 AF specialists from 10 European countries, Canada and the USA are expected to participate in the 7th AFNET/EHRA consensus conference.  The two-day meeting will start with a plenary session, in which participants will give short presentations on the topics i) stratification of patients with AF, ii) rhythm control therapy and iii) stroke prevention. Thereafter, participants will split into breakout groups to discuss specific questions. The results of these workshops will be summarized and further discussed in additional plenaries to achieve a consensus that will be published afterwards.

The conference is co-organised by AFNET and EHRA. Additional financial support is provided by CATCH ME (Characterizing Atrial fibrillation by Translating its Causes into Health Modifiers in the Elderly), which is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement No 633196). Industry participants will pay an attendance fee.
